On Sunday night in London, the prestigious British Academy Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) took place. From Alia Bhatt to Farhan Akhtar, several Bollywood personalities attended the grand event.
A major highlight for Indian cinema was that the Manipuri film Boong, produced under Farhan Akhtar’s banner, won the award in the Best Children’s & Family Film category. Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt also marked a special milestone by presenting an award at the BAFTA stage for the very first time. This was her debut appearance at the ceremony, and she truly impressed everyone with her grace and confidence.
On the BAFTA red carpet, Alia stunned in a shimmering backless silver Gucci gown, looking absolutely elegant. She presented the award for Best Film Not in the English Language, but what truly won hearts was the way she delivered her speech.
Host Alan Cumming invited Alia on stage. Dressed in her silver gown, she greeted the audience with a warm “Namaskar.” She began her speech in Hindi and then translated it into English. While presenting the award, Alia said, “The next award is for a film that is not in the English language.” She then added with a smile, “You don’t need to look at the subtitles just yet,” before repeating her message in English and introducing the nominees.
Alia Bhatt’s Speech
During her speech, Alia said:
“Namaskar. The next award goes to a film that is not in Hindi. Please don’t rush to the subtitles. I was just saying in Hindi that our next award is for a film that is not in English. Because films may speak in countless voices and languages, but what truly connects us all is cinema — something we all understand.”
Which Film Won?
Alia then announced that the Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value, directed by Joachim Trier, won the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language. The film triumphed over It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, Sirat, and The Voice of Hind Rajab.
Alia’s gesture instantly became the talk of the internet. On BAFTA’s official Instagram page, fans flooded the comments section with praise. One user wrote, “So proud of her.” Another commented, “Speaking Hindi on the BAFTA stage is a historic step — proud of you, Alia!” Many others expressed how proud they felt seeing Hindi represented on such a prestigious global platform.
