Kamini Kaushal was born on January 24, 1927, in Lahore, into the family of renowned botanist Professor S.R. Kashyap. Her real name was Uma Kashyap. She was the youngest among two brothers and three sisters. She was only seven years old when her father passed away. Uma was talented from a very young age. Academically brilliant, she built her own puppet theatre at the age of 10 and also performed radio plays on All India Radio. Filmmaker Chetan Anand heard her on the radio and was deeply impressed by her melodious voice. He offered her the film Neecha Nagar. Since his wife’s name was also Uma (Anand), he gave her the screen name "Kamini."

Achieved stardom at the age of 20

Kamini Kaushal began her film career in 1946 with Neecha Nagar, in which she played the role of Roopa. The film premiered on September 29, 1946, at the Cannes Film Festival in France, where it won the prestigious Golden Palm award. This was Chetan Anand’s directorial debut. By the age of 20, Kamini had already reached the peak of stardom. In the second phase of her career, she became well-known for portraying the on-screen mother of actor Manoj Kumar.

Some of Kamini Kaushal’s most celebrated films include Shaheed (1948), Nadiya Ke Paar (1948), Aag (1948), Ziddi (1948), Shabnam (1949), Aarzu (1950), and Biraj Bahu (1954). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 1954 for Biraj Bahu. Along with her acting talent, Kamini Kaushal was admired for her beauty. She worked alongside stars from every era. She was seen as Shahid Kapoor’s grandmother in Kabir Singh and also portrayed Shah Rukh Khan’s grandmother in Chennai Express
