The trailer of Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri’s film O Romeo is currently trending on social media. The film is based on Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. Shahid Kapoor plays the role of mafia don Hussain Ustra, while Triptii Dimri is seen as Sapna aka Sapna Didi. But who was Sapna Didi in real life? Why did she want to kill underworld don Dawood Ibrahim? Here is the true story behind the character.

Revenge Against Dawood Ibrahim Was Sapna Didi’s Only Goal
This story dates back to the late 1980s. Sapna Didi’s real name was Ashraf. She wanted to kill Dawood Ibrahim because her husband was murdered on Dawood’s orders. After losing her husband, Sapna had only one mission in life—to take revenge by killing Dawood Ibrahim. To achieve this, she took the help of Hussain Ustra, who also shared a deep rivalry with Dawood. Sapna and Hussain began working together. Hussain trained Sapna in how to kill and survive in the underworld.

Challenging Dawood’s Criminal Empire
Sapna Didi quietly challenged Dawood Ibrahim’s criminal empire. She formed her own gang to fight against D-Company. With her efforts, several of Dawood’s illegal gambling dens, dance bars, and other criminal operations in Mumbai were shut down. In the 1990s, she even plotted to assassinate Dawood Ibrahim during an India–Pakistan cricket match in Sharjah. However, her plan was leaked, and the assassination attempt failed.

Sapna Didi Was Brutally Killed
According to media reports, in 1994, Dawood Ibrahim’s men attacked Sapna Didi. She was stabbed 22 times, bringing a tragic end to her story. The film O Romeo also portrays a love story between Sapna Didi and Hussain Ustra—something that has sparked controversy.

Hussain Ustra’s Family Objects to the Film
Recently, a song from O Romeo titled ‘Hum Toh Tere Hi Liye’ was released, showing a romantic relationship between Sapna (Triptii Dimri) and Hussain Ustra (Shahid Kapoor). Hussain Ustra’s family has strongly objected to this portrayal.

In a media interview, Hussain Ustra’s daughter said,
“The story shown in the film is wrong. My father trained Sapna Didi, but she was like a sister to him. She used to visit our home and office. Sapna Didi had no one—no children—and after her husband’s murder, she was completely alone.

She went everywhere asking for help. My father helped her. Together, they worked against criminals. Their methods may have been wrong, but this happened 28 years ago. The film damages my father’s image.”
