Republic Day: More Than a Date, a Tribute to Our Bravehearts

Republic Day is not just a date on the calendar—it is a day to remember the brave sons of the soil because of whom our tricolour flies freely in the open sky today.
Today, we bring you the story of a lion-hearted soldier who refused to surrender even after being hit by 15 bullets. This warrior of steel is Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav.

Early Life: Patriotism in His Blood

Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav was born on May 10, 1980, in Aurangabad Ahir village of Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh. Patriotism ran in his veins. His father, Karan Singh Yadav, served in the Indian Army and fought in the 1965 and 1971 wars, while his elder brother was also in the armed forces.
Growing up in such an environment, the army was not just a profession for Yogendra—it was his passion.

A Soldier at Just 16

At the age of 16, Yogendra Singh Yadav applied to join the Indian Army. After intense training, strict discipline, and unwavering determination, he became part of the 18 Grenadiers.
Though young in age, his courage matched that of the most seasoned warriors.

Kargil War 1999: The Battle for Tiger Hill

The defining moment of his life came in 1999, during the Kargil War. The enemy had captured Tiger Hill, located at a height of 16,500 feet, giving them a direct view of Indian positions. Reclaiming Tiger Hill was crucial for India.

The mission was planned for the dark, freezing night of July 3–4, 1999. Scaling a steep, icy cliff and fixing ropes to create a route was extremely dangerous.
Nineteen-year-old Yogendra Singh Yadav volunteered for the task.

15 Bullets, Unbreakable Courage

As the team advanced, the enemy launched a fierce attack using bullets and grenades. Every member of Yogendra’s team was martyred.
Yogendra himself was hit by more than 15 bullets and shrapnel—his shoulder, waist, and legs were soaked in blood.

Yet, this son of Mother India did not bow. Severely injured, he crawled towards the enemy bunker, hurled a grenade, and neutralised several enemy soldiers.
His extraordinary bravery inspired fellow soldiers, and soon the Indian tricolour was hoisted atop Tiger Hill.

Victory Over Death and the Param Vir Chakra

Gravely wounded, Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav spent nearly one and a half years in hospital. But he defeated death itself.
On January 26, 2000, he was awarded India’s highest military honour, the Param Vir Chakra. He became the youngest soldier in Indian history to receive this prestigious award.

Why His Story Must Be Told Again and Again

Stories of warriors like Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav should not remain confined to history books. A powerful medium to carry these stories to future generations is cinema.
Real-life heroes like him deserve to be portrayed on the big screen—so every child and every young person understands that a true hero is one who is ready to sacrifice everything for the nation
